Every American citizen needs to engage in protesting something at least once in their life. Your ability to protest against misdeeds and injustice and evil is protected by the First Amendment of the Constitution.
This was given to us by the forefathers in order to give us the power to change this country in the way that we see fit. Unfortunately, many citizens do not realize that their American right of the freedom of speech is slowly being taken away. Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin know this for a fact.
Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin are well known in the immigration seen as advocates for the rights of immigrants. They fight to make sure that refugees, migrant workers, and even those who are here illegally are given the proper treatment in order to become productive citizens who added value to the United States of America.
These two men have mostly made their views known through the Village Voice media which owns the Phoenix New Times as well as the For Page Confidential. They exercised their American right to speak freely by reporting on how the Maricopa County Sheriff has refused to abide by law and instead has acted in vindictive ways against the immigrants within the state of Arizona.
Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin cried when they revealed the story of how Sheriff Joseph Arpaio was the cause for a pregnant woman losing her child. The woman was only one month away from delivering her baby when she was detained and put through the prison system.
The stress upon her was so great that she began to feel pain in her abdominal region. She reported this to the security guards and asked to be evaluated medically, which is her American right. This right was denied her and instead she was forced to stay in her jail cell. It is heartbreaking the even write this but she lost her baby that day.
Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin also got video evidence that showed how the security guards hired by Sheriff Joseph Arpaio brutally beat and mistreated the Hispanic population within the prison. Read more: Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund and Michael Lacey | Twitter
This included security guards beginning the attack themselves as well as forcing the Hispanic men to engage in hard labor underneath the Arizona scorching sun.
Sheriff Joseph Arpaio would end up getting unmarked SUVs and driving to the homes of Lacey and Larkin on October 18, 2007. Using his selective enforcement unit he would remove them from the safety of their homes and throw them into the same prisons where he brutally beat the Hispanic men.
News got out on what happened and the country cried out against this violation of rights. Michael and Jim were released and they were given $3.75 million for their troubles.
Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin now give out that money through the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund in the form of monetary grants in order to help younger activists begin their own nonprofits in order to fight for the immigrant rights.
